Chapter Three

COLE

“…so get this, I was standing there reading the couple’s Miranda Rights and the next thing I knew, the wife tries to bulldoze past me. I know, bad idea right? So I was standing there and I thought the woman was going to reach for my gun, you know. Turns out, all she wanted was to get past me to give her husband a smack down.” Joe McKellan recalled as he stood near the coffee machine sharing yet another one of his stories to the rest of the guys on duty at the station.

I don’t think it mattered to anyone what he said, half the fun was watching him use the attention he garnered as fodder for telling more stories in the future. Sure, we’ve heard the story several times this week and each time it was told the ending was completely different. You could tell McKellan got off on telling wildly unbelievable stories and lived for the reactions he received. Whenever it was story time, he became a new man and was expressive in his face as he told a new one. There he was:

The raised eyebrows.

The wide and expressive eyes.

The bright smile.

The last time McKellan told an interesting story worthy of listening to, it was his first month on the job. NO one knew him quite yet so up until this point he was still the cool and mysterious stranger. Initially, everyone listened to him talk about who he was in a past life and all of the adventures he’s been on; eventually it progressed to what it was today.

I’ve heard all of those stories too and I really don’t care to hear them anymore. Whenever I saw h im telling yet another one, I just continued on with my day.

“Hey, Kinney, come over here. I’m in the middle of telling the guys about the arrest I made the other day.”

“Nah, that’s alright man, maybe next time. I’m a little beat.”

When I joined the Sheriff’s department, I never thought I would be hitting the streets, arresting bad guys, keeping people safe and sharing all of that with hearing stories far more eccentric than those in my dreams. I expected drama and a little craziness because that tends to happen when you put a lot of men and women in in the same room together. Hearing the ins and outs of colonoscopies and ‘What’s that weird thing on my back?’, it never even crossed my mind. I was starting to think that I knew more than Web MD and I could be a real dick sometimes. Yet, I must have been a magnet because everyone kept wanting to share their secrets with me. Jed was the good cop out of the two of us so I tried to leave all of the listening and storytelling to him. He lived and breathed for that shit.

I was completely aware McKellan was still standing there waiting for me to join the circle that currently surrounded him and you’d think saying ‘no’ once would have been enough but with him, apparently not.
